Wow, can you believe it? The holidays have arrived, and gift shopping is in full gear. Surely some of you spent your Thanksgiving break shopping around (with all of those crazy people) looking for great gifts at a bargain price, and you pretty much have your shopping done, right? Yeah, me neither.
Tired of giving out impersonal gift cards or boring gift baskets? Or just tired of getting all the things you didn't want? Well, never fear, your fashion columnist is here to tell you about the latest and greatest fashionable gift ideas this holiday season. And of course, I'll give you the worst to; it's only fitting, seeing that this will be my second to last fashion column at SRU.
I don't think that I have ever been as stumped as I am this year about what to get my friends and family. If your mom, dad, sister, brother are anything like mine, they are quite hard to shop for, especially when it comes to clothes.
To shop for women is much more difficult than shopping for men in the clothing arena, especially when it's the men doing the buying. You have to worry about getting the right sizes and also getting things that are appropriate to their age. Women won't be quite so understanding as men if you buy them a size 10 when they are a size six. You'll never live that down. Or, if you buy something that is way too young or way too old for a woman, you might as well staple the receipt to your forehead while they're opening it.
You also, naturally, have the problem of what to do if you receive something you don't like, but you don't want to hurt the other person's feelings. These are all difficult situations that can be avoided by getting a gift that would please any man or woman.
For Mom, I have found that accessories are the best way to go. Buying pants, shoes or even tops can be a hassle, and give probably a 50 percent chance of a return.
Remember what I told you a couple of weeks ago about scarves? Well, Moms love scarves, and even if she already has one, you can never have too many. And I don't mean to try to knit her one. That is, unless you have some proven skills, then and only then do I approve. This one is for you guys. It can't be that hard to pick out a nice scarf for your mom.
