At Thursday's Student Government Association meeting, senators discussed a new initiative request by the University Program Board for the movie series, and voted to make the decision at the next Cooperative Activities Board meeting on Jan. 22.
UPB requested that their budget be raised from $9,000 per semester to $15,000 per semester because they are now showing double features on Fridays and Saturdays, and an unknown amount for advertising.
According to information distributed at the meeting, the movie series planned for next semester will be $15,000 plus shipping. Shipping and handling costs $26 per weekend.
The movie series was previously an SGA project, but UPB picked it up whenever SGA dropped it because UPB felt it was too important to the students to discontinue, said Sade Battle, UPB president.
Whenever UPB took the movie series over, the original budget of $20,644 was transferred to them. Earlier in the semester, UPB told Co-Op that it would only need $9,000 per semester, leaving $2,944 out of its original budget.
Larry Brink, SGA president, said that UPB was told it could use the left over money for advertising, but UPB preferred to leave the money where it was.
Battle said UPB does not have the funds to advertise. It is expensive to pay $175 per week for a half-page ad, she said.
"Advertising is expensive, but worth it," Battle said.
Erin Berger, SGA vice president of Financial Affairs, said she didn't understand why it was necessary to run a half-page ad instead of a smaller ad, which could also be effective.
Battle argued that bigger ads are more beneficial than smaller ads.
"Things get lost when they are smaller," Battle said.
"A smaller ad would be a hindrance to the program."
Battle said advertising is necessary so that students are aware of when the movies are playing.
"We spend a lot of money on movies," Battle said. "It is only right for students to see them."
