Men of SRU, we need to have a talk. With the recent drop in temperatures, the plague is upon us. The Sweatshirt Plague. So far, it's claimed approximately one-third of you, kind of like the Bubonic plague in the 1300s. Apparently, history does repeat itself, minus the huge swollen glands and death. Nevertheless, the Sweatshirt Plague is still just as devastating.

I haven't figured out why, but every autumn, many guys automatically fall into the habit of wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts. All the time. Sometimes, the sweatpants and sweatshirts match. This combination is just about as bad as the brightly colored velour tracksuits from a few years ago that are now the poster child for all things ugly.

Granted, I do understand some of the reasoning behind the plague. Sweatpants are extremely comfortable. I wear them almost every night. But I refuse to wear them outside. I've honestly never done that, much to my roommate's annoyance. I know that I'm of the opposite sex, and women have garments such as leggings and sweater dresses that, while they are just as comfortable as sweats, would look extremely odd on a man. But I don't think the lack of leggings in a man's wardrobe is a sufficient excuse for the prevalence of sweatpants.

I've never had the intention to tell people how to dress. I believe that you should wear whatever makes you most confident, regardless of others' opinions. But I also believe that people should take pride in their appearance. I think that we're losing the pride that was once so prevalent, perhaps because clothing has become so disposable.

So be a man. Wear nice clothes on an ordinary day. You'll be surprised how good it makes you feel. Plus, you'll stand out from all those other guys afflicted with the plague.
